Continuing Ed Courses for Law Enforcement Officers
- Death Notification
When an unexpected death occurs, who should notify the family? What if they are some distance from the deceased? How soon should they be called? In the middle of the night? How do you find the right family member to call?
(3 credits; state endorsements and schedule to be announced)
- Is the Coroner also a Funeral Director?
If you're the coroner and also a funeral director, how do you handle the "conflict of interest" issue? If your competitor is the coroner and you're not getting your fair share of calls, what can you do? What do families need to know? As a police officer, should you recommend for or against a particular funeral home?
(3 credits; state endorsements and schedule to be announced)
- Organ and Tissue Donation: How to Ask
What is the difference in the way the body is handled if tissue and bone are donated for transplant and those donated for research? What if there will be an open-casket funeral? Will there be an added cost at the funeral home? What about whole body donation? Will the family get back any cremated remains? Are some of the body brokers operating as for-profit companies? If so, what should you know?
(3 credits; state endorsements and schedule to be announced)
- Who is making the funeral arrangements and why you should care?
Before you let someone tell you which funeral home to call, know the laws in your state. Do you take orders from the person who will be paying the bill? What about the live-in girlfriend and the nearly-ex-wife? What if there's a disagreement among children? How do you handle gay and lesbian partners? What about do-it-yourself-funeral families?
(3 credits; state endorsements and schedule to be announced)
